Journey Time Calculator
Enter a distance and an average speed to calculate how long the journey takes, shown as hours, minutes, and seconds.
Calculate journey duration from distance and average speed
Distance is converted to metres and average speed to metres per second using the same conversion primitives as the distance and speed converters, then time = distance ÷ speed. The duration is shown as hours, minutes, and seconds, plus decimal hours and total minutes for logging and planning.
Distance and speed units are independent — you can mix miles with km/h or kilometres with mph, and the calculator converts internally.
Choosing an average speed
Journey time depends on your average speed, which is usually well below the speed limit once junctions, traffic, and stops are counted:
- Motorway driving: 90–105 km/h (55–65 mph) average is typical
- Mixed A-road/rural driving: 60–75 km/h (37–47 mph)
- Urban driving: 20–35 km/h (12–22 mph)
- Road cycling: 20–30 km/h; commuting by e-bike: 20–25 km/h
Reference values
- 250 km at 100 km/h = 2:30:00
- 120 miles at 60 mph = 2:00:00
- 15 km at 25 km/h (bicycle) = 0:36:00
