Convert tyre pressure between PSI, bar, and kPa
All conversions use kilopascals (kPa) as a canonical intermediate value, which avoids rounding errors when chaining between units. 1 bar = 100 kPa exactly, and 1 psi = 6.894757293168 kPa. Results maintain full floating-point precision internally and are formatted for readability.
Units supported
- Pounds per square inch (psi) — used in the UK, US, and on most tyre gauges sold there.
- Bar — used across Europe; roughly one atmosphere of pressure.
- Kilopascals (kPa) — the SI unit, used on vehicle placards in many countries and in Australia and New Zealand.
Reference values
- 32 psi = 2.21 bar = 220.6 kPa
- A typical car tyre: 30–36 psi (2.1–2.5 bar)
- A typical road bicycle tyre: 80–120 psi (5.5–8.3 bar)
- A typical motorcycle tyre: 33–42 psi (2.3–2.9 bar)
Always follow the pressures on your vehicle’s tyre placard or handbook — usually inside the driver’s door frame or fuel filler flap — and check tyres cold for accurate readings.
